Ribbon: Red and white horizontal stripes with narrow red and white edges.

Instituted: 22 October 1849.

Awarded: To officers for deeds of bravery or other praiseworthy service in the face of the enemy or outstanding service in peacetime.

Grades: Originally 1 (similar to the Class 3 insignia), on 12 January 1860 the War Decoration was added for wartime awards, on 23 September 1914 the decoration was divided into three classes and finally on 13 December 1916 the use of crossed swords to mark awards for bravery.
