Awarded: To members of the Defence Forces and members of the Army Nursing and Chaplaincy Services for any act of exceptional bravery or gallantry (other than one performed on war service) arising out of, or associated with, military service and involving risk to life and limb.

Grades: 3 (originally 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class, present titles established in January 1984.)
