Instituted: 4 April 1892 by the Queen Dowager Emma.

Awarded: To Dutch citzens and foreigners who have proved themselves to be specially deserving towards the Head of State or society in general.

Grades: 5 (Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight) in Civil and Military Divisions plus 3 Medals. In 1994, the Medals were abolished and replaced by the class of Member, which may only be awarded to citizens of The Netherlands.
