Ribbon: Purple with narrow light blue/yellow/light blue edge stripes.
Instituted: 9 April 1891 (as a Congo Free State order, incorporated into the Belgian system in 1908).
Discontinued: 1 July 1962, although it remains in the Order of Precedence.
Awarded: For meritorious service to the Belgian colony or its sovereign.
Grades: 5 classes (Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight) and 3 medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze).
