Ribbon: Equal stripes of black, red and yellow bearing the national crest in gold.

Instituted: 31 March 1949, as the German National Prize in the Goethe Year 1949.
Renamed: 16 March 1950.

Awarded: For outstanding creative work in the fields of science and technology, important mathematical and scientific discoveries and technological inventions, the introduction of new work and production methods and for outstanding works and achievements in the fields of art and literature. It could be awarded to groups as well as individuals. Before 1973 it was a gold medal, thereafter gold-plated. At this time, the custom of including the year of award on the reverse was also dropped.

Grades: 3 - however it appears that the insignia was the same, it was the size of the monetary award that accompanied it that varied.
