Ribbon: Crimson with white-edged purple central stripe.

Instituted: September 1999 by Queen Elizabeth II, replacing the Distinguished Service Order, the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Conspicuous Gallantry Medals (naval & flying).

Awarded: For acts of outstanding gallantry in situations of danger.
