Instituted: 1789, a secularisation of the religious Royal Order of the Knights of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Real Ordem dos Cavaleiros de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo) formed in 1317 out of the remains of the Templars after their disbandment.
Awarded: For outstanding services to the Republic in government, diplomacy, public service and administration.
Grades: 5 (Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight).
