Instituted: 23 February 1748 by King Frederick I.

Awarded: Originally presented for bravery in the field and at sea, and later also as a reward for long and distinguished service in the armed forces. It is no longer awarded.

Grades: 5 (Commander Grand Cross, Commander 1st Class, Commander, Knight 1st Class, Knight), plus the Badge of the Sword, the Medal of the Sword, Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword and the War Cross of the Order of the Sword.
