Awarded: For services to Scotland and to the Crown.

Grades: 1 (Knight or Lady of the Thistle).

The collar, mantle and hat are worn at ceremonies of the Order in St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

On formal occasions, members of the Order wear the badge, on a sash worn over the left shoulder, and the star. The ribbon is not worn on those occasions when ribbons only are worn.
