Ribbon: Pale blue with pale yellow central stripe.
Instituted: 30 December 1888 (as an order of the independent state of Congo, becoming a Belgian Order from 1908).
Discontinued: 30 June 1960 on Congo becoming independent, although it remains in the Order of Precedence.
Awarded: For services to the Congo and towards the furtherance of African civilisation.
Grades: 5 classes (Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight) and 3 medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze).
