Scene 9: Eldon and ButlerThe characters may wish to find out what Eldon is doing. He is back in his hotel, with Philip Butler. If they confront Eldon and Butler, Eldon breaks down and confesses that on a Butler Foundation-sponsored dig in Egypt he discovered the remains of St Anthony. The saint's bones were mixed with pieces of horn which he deduced belonged to the devil that St Anthony was reputed to have fought at intervals throughout his life. When he reported back to the Foundation, Philip Butler had become extremely excited. He had contacted Orlov and hired him to attempt to clone the devil from the pieces of horn, sending him to Egypt to obtain a sample as the Egyptian Department of Antiquities would not allow removal of the remains from the country. However, although the grave appeared undisturbed not all of the saint's bones were in there. During this account, Butler first attempts to order Eldon to silence, then - realising that all is going to come out - he leaves the room while the characters are listening. A Spot check at DC 25 is necessary to notice him sneaking out. If he manages to get away, he goes to the Institute and breaks in (assuming this is after Armentov is slain). He will confront Genima and steal her amulet - he's just realised its significance - and will then enter the ventilation shafts and attempt to establish control over the devil. He'll fail, and get eaten by it. It then proceeds to the laboratory, drags Genima into the shaft and kills her too. (This may not happen if the characters have been to the laboratory before visiting the hotel, or if he fails to get away from them. Adjust events as necessary.) |
